UNIVERSITY CENTER MALL
Friends of Alaska CASA is gearing up for its 22nd Annual Silent Quilt Auction to be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at the University Center Mall, 3800 Old Seward Highway, in Anchorage.
We anticipate receiving well over 175 donated quilts in all shapes, sizes, and themes from incredibly generous quilters. Not only can you donate a quilt for this years’ quilt auction, you can also ask friends and family members to contribute a quilt as well. Additionally, pass the word by telling everyone you know about the event!
Along with the auction quilts, we have an Alaska seaside themed raffle quilt, Seward’s Folly, made by a wonderful CASA supporter, Sharon Hillstrom, and machine quilted by another tremendous CASA supporter, Melanie Brown. Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Tickets will be on sale before and during the auction, with the winning ticket being drawn at 3:00 at the event. The winner does not need to be present to win.
The deadline for submitting a completed quilt is Saturday, November 10, 2018 at noon. Quilts may be dropped off in Anchorage at The Quilt Tree, Quilt Zone, and Seams Like Home, in Eagle River at the Quilt Cache and Twisted Sisters, in Wasilla at Sylvia’s Quilt Depot, and in Palmer at Just Sew. A data form must be submitted with every quilt donation and you can download the form here.

Systemic Change in Alaska Child Welfare
By Gloria O’Neil
As a new member of the National CASA Board of Trustees, I am honored to bring a tribal perspective to one of the greatest issues facing Alaska Native people: the crisis in child protection. Despite efforts by the state court system and child protective services agencies, disproportionality and disparity in child protective custody for Alaska Native children have persisted and intensified over the past thirty years. We must do better. This is the time to think comprehensively, to take our experiences and the lessons we have learned and make systemic change to improve outcomes for Alaska Native children.>> Read More
